What is the Azim Premji Scholarship?

The Azim Premji Scholarship is a programme of the Azim Premji Foundation that supports girl students from disadvantaged backgrounds to continue their college education. It pays ₹30,000 every year, for as long as the first undergraduate degree or diploma lasts.

The programme began as a pilot in three states in 2024-25, supporting more than 25,000 girl students. The Foundation says it has supported 1.95 lakh girl students so far in 2025-26. It is a separate thing from Azim Premji University, and students admitted to that university are not eligible. It is also separate from the scholarships of Wipro, which comes up again in the eligibility rules below.

Because the award is not decided by marks, it works differently from the schemes described in this guide to merit-based and need-based scholarships. What matters is whether you meet each eligibility condition and submit clean documents.

Who is eligible for the Azim Premji Scholarship 2026-27?

A girl student must satisfy all of the following conditions. The Foundation states them in plain terms, and missing one means you cannot apply.

  • Passed both Class 10 and Class 12 as a regular student from a government school or college in one of the eligible states or Union Territories.
  • Taken admission in the first year (academic session 2026-27) as a regular student of a recognised undergraduate degree or diploma course of 2 to 5 years.
  • Studying at a government college or a credible, bona fide private college or university, anywhere in India.
  • Applying for her first undergraduate degree or diploma after Class 12.

There is no age limit and no merit requirement. The documents the Foundation asks for do not include an income certificate, so there is no income proof step in the application.

Which states and Union Territories are eligible?

Twenty one states and Union Territories are eligible for the 2026 cohort. Andhra Pradesh and Delhi (NCT) were added this year. What counts is where you passed Class 10 and Class 12, while the college can be anywhere in India.

  • Chhattisgarh
  • Delhi (NCT)
  • Jharkhand

How much is the Azim Premji Scholarship amount?

The scholarship is ₹30,000 a year, awarded for the full duration of the first undergraduate degree or diploma. A three year degree therefore adds up to ₹90,000 and a four year course to ₹1.2 lakh. These totals are our arithmetic on the annual figure and not a number published by the Foundation.

You will need an active savings account in a scheduled commercial bank, because the bank details you upload are used for the scholarship. Disbursal and confirmation for shortlisted applicants happen after you log in and complete the process on the portal.

Azim Premji Scholarship dates and application status

The 2026 cohort works in two rounds. Round 1 has closed, and Round 2 submission opens on 10 January 2027. Students who missed Round 1 are asked to register and upload all documents now.

Dates that matter

Take care with third party pages. Some show the Round 2 window as January 2026, which belongs to the previous cycle, and one portal lists a 31 October 2026 deadline that the Foundation does not mention. The Foundation's own applications page is the date to follow.

How to apply online for the Azim Premji Scholarship

You apply only through the Foundation's website, and there is no fee. The steps below follow the order of the portal. Because submission is open only in Round 2 for now, use them to prepare.

  1. Open the official page. Go to the Azim Premji Foundation scholarship applications page and choose "New Registrations - 2026 Cohort". Students who already registered use the login option.
  2. Register. Create your account on the scholarship portal. Education sites report that registration uses your mobile number and an OTP.
  3. Confirm eligibility. Check the conditions again before you start filling in details.
  4. Fill in the application form. It asks for personal, academic and bank details.
  5. Upload your documents. Follow the format and size rules in the next section exactly.
  6. Review and submit during the Round 2 window, 10 to 31 January 2027.
  7. Log in later to check status. Confirmation and disbursal updates appear in your account.

The Foundation also publishes explainer videos on its YouTube channel and offers a WhatsApp support line on 9019960536, answered Monday to Friday between 9 AM and 5 PM.

What documents are required?

All documents must be uploaded online. The Foundation accepts only PDF, PNG or JPG files between 30 KB and 500 KB.

The Foundation has also published a document guidelines PDF in several languages. Read it before you scan anything.

How are students selected?

The scholarship is not awarded on merit, so there is no marks cut-off or entrance test. The Foundation checks that an applicant meets the eligibility conditions and that her documents are clear and valid, and then confirms the scholarship for shortlisted applicants. The Foundation has not published a ranking method, so treat any website that describes a scoring system with caution.

How does renewal work for the 2024 and 2025 cohorts?

Scholars from the 2024 and 2025 cohorts must renew for academic year 2026-27. Renewal is open now, and the deadline for the first batch is 30 October 2026. The Foundation runs it on a separate renewal page, so scholars should follow that page and not the fresh application route.

What if you missed Round 1?

You still have a route. Register on the portal and upload your documents now, then submit the application in Round 2, from 10 to 31 January 2027. Use the months in between to fix anything that could get a document rejected, such as a photo taken too long ago, a blurred marksheet or a bank account that is dormant.

You do not have to wait for January to look for money. The National Scholarship Portal lists most central schemes for 2026-27 until 31 October 2026, and girls in technical courses can check AICTE Pragati there. For girls in particular, this guide to government scholarships for girl students and the Wings for Her programme are good places to continue.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a private school is acceptable. Both Class 10 and Class 12 must be from a government school or college.
  • Applying in the second year. Only first year students qualify, and the first degree must be the first after Class 12.
  • Choosing distance learning. The course must be regular.
  • Uploading selfies or screenshots. The Foundation lists these as items not to submit.
  • Using a dormant or non-scheduled bank account. The account must be active and in a scheduled commercial bank.
  • Paying an agent. There is no fee, and the Foundation warns about impostors.
  • Trusting old dates. Round 2 of the 2026 cohort is in January 2027, not January 2026.
