What is the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme?
It is a Government of India scholarship that helps meritorious students from low-income families cover part of their day-to-day expenses while studying at college or university. The Department of Higher Education has run it since 2008, and it now sits under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan (PM-USP) Yojana.
Awards are based on Class 12 board results, not on a separate entrance test. Up to 82,000 fresh scholarships are available each year, and half are earmarked for girls. Slots are divided among State Boards by the population aged 18 to 25 in each state, after setting aside the shares of CBSE and ICSE, and then spread across Humanities, Science and Commerce in a 3:3:1 ratio. Girls looking for wider support can also read about Wings for Her on Scholarlify.
One thing to clear up early: several unrelated schemes also carry the words "Central Sector" in their names, such as the Top Class Education scheme for SC students. This article is only about the PM-USP CSSS for college and university students.
What is the last date for the Central Sector Scholarship 2026-27?
The last date for students to submit a renewal application on NSP is 31 October 2026. Your institute must then verify the form by 15 November 2026, and the second level of verification closes on 30 November 2026.
| Stage | Last date | Who acts |
|---|---|---|
| Student application (renewal) | 31 October 2026 | Student |
| Institute verification | 15 November 2026 | Institute Nodal Officer |
| L2 verification | 30 November 2026 | State or designated nodal agency |
Some education websites still show 30 September 2026 for this scheme. The NSP student announcement, which is the official source, shows 31 October 2026, so follow that date. Also remember that 31 October is only the date by which you must submit the form. A form that your college has not verified by 15 November can still fail, so ask your nodal officer to confirm verification in the first week of November. The Scholarships in India 2026-27 guide lists the same deadline pattern for the other central schemes.
What about fresh applications? NSP's announcement mentions renewal applications only. No fresh application window for 2026-27 has been announced on the portal, so no fresh opening or closing date can be confirmed yet. First-year students should keep an eye on the NSP announcements page instead of relying on a date quoted elsewhere.
Who is eligible for the Central Sector Scholarship?
A fresh applicant needs to be above the 80th percentile of successful candidates in their Class 12 board stream, come from a family with a gross income of up to ₹4.5 lakh a year, and be studying a regular degree course. Renewal applicants must also keep their marks and attendance up.
| Condition | Fresh applicant | Renewal applicant |
|---|---|---|
| Class 12 result | Above the 80th percentile of successful candidates in the relevant stream of the board | Already awarded, no fresh check |
| Family income | Up to ₹4.5 lakh a year, with an income certificate | Income certificate not required again |
| Course | Regular degree course, not distance, correspondence or diploma | Same |
| Institution | Recognised by AICTE or the relevant regulator, with a valid AISHE code | Same, and you may change college if the new one has a valid AISHE code |
| Other benefits | Must not be receiving another scholarship, including a state scheme or a fee waiver or reimbursement | Same |
| Performance | Not applicable | At least 50% marks in the annual examination and at least 75% attendance |
The 80th percentile is not the same as 80% marks. The percentile is worked out against successful candidates in your stream and board, so the actual marks needed differ from board to board and stream to stream. A student with 78% in one board may clear the cut-off, while a student with 82% in another may not.
If you miss the renewal window in a given year, the guidelines say you are not permanently debarred, and you can renew for the following year if you still meet the renewal conditions. That missed year's money is lost, though. Complaints of indiscipline, including ragging, can lead to the scholarship being withdrawn.
Students who receive another government or state scholarship should also remember NSP's rule for 2026-27: one merit-based scheme and one or more welfare-based schemes. The CSSS is a merit-based scheme. Check the scheme rules of any second award before you stack them.
How much money does the Central Sector Scholarship pay?
The scholarship pays ₹12,000 a year for the first three years of a graduation course and ₹20,000 a year at postgraduate level.
| Course | Rate per year | Years |
|---|---|---|
| Graduation (BA, BSc, BCom and similar) | ₹12,000 | First three years |
| Postgraduate | ₹20,000 | Duration of the PG course |
| Five-year professional or integrated course | ₹20,000 | Fourth and fifth year (₹12,000 in the first three) |
| BTech or BE | ₹20,000 | Fourth year only (₹12,000 in the first three) |
The money is paid by Direct Benefit Transfer into a savings account held in the student's own name. After the form is processed, you can follow the payment on the PFMS "Know Your Payment" page using your Aadhaar number, bank account number or NSP application ID.
What documents do you need?
Keep scanned copies ready before you log in, because mismatched details are a common reason for rejection.
- A One Time Registration (OTR) number, which is a 14-digit ID created using Aadhaar or an Aadhaar Enrolment ID
- Class 12 marksheet (credentials are checked through DigiLocker)
- Family income certificate, needed only by fresh applicants
- Savings bank account in your own name, seeded with Aadhaar so that payment can reach you
- Bonafide or enrolment details of your current course and institute
- Caste certificate if you are claiming reservation, and UDID details for benchmark disability
Renewal applicants mainly need their OTR login, current course details and the latest examination result and attendance details the form asks for.
How to renew the Central Sector Scholarship on NSP
- Log in with your OTR. Go to the "Apply For Scholarship" login on scholarships.gov.in and use your OTR ID and password. If you have no OTR yet, create one first. The NSP registration and apply guide walks through that step.
- Choose renewal and the right scheme. Select the PM-USP Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students (CSSS). Do not pick a look-alike scheme.
- Check your details. Confirm your course, institute, marks and bank account before moving ahead.
- Upload documents and submit. Save or print the final application and note your application ID.
- Ask your college to verify. Your Institute Nodal Officer must verify the form by 15 November 2026.
- Track the status. Watch the application status on NSP and the payment on PFMS.
Renewal rules differ between NSP, state and private scholarships, so it helps to read this scholarship renewal guide if you hold more than one award.
How are applications selected?
Every application is verified at two levels. First your institute checks it, and then the State Higher Education Department or an agency nominated by the state does the second check. The selection list is generated and shown on NSP. Getting an application ID does not guarantee an award, because fresh scholarships are limited by the slots given to each board, stream and category.
Reservation follows the central policy: 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 27% for OBC and 5% horizontal reservation for students with benchmark disabilities. Vacant slots in one group can be given to other groups so that as many eligible students as possible benefit.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reading the 80th percentile as 80% marks. Check your board's percentile list instead of guessing.
- Treating 31 October as the finish line. Verification by your institute is part of the process.
- Holding two awards that clash. A state scholarship or fee waiver can make you ineligible under the guidelines.
- Applying under the wrong scheme. Similar scheme names are easy to mix up on the portal.
- Skipping Aadhaar seeding. A bank account that is not linked cannot receive the transfer.
- Letting marks or attendance slip. Renewal depends on 50% marks and 75% attendance.
- Trusting dates on third-party pages. When websites disagree, the NSP announcement decides.
Frequently asked questions
What is the last date to renew the Central Sector Scholarship for 2026-27? The last date for students is 31 October 2026. Institute verification ends on 15 November 2026 and L2 verification on 30 November 2026, as per the NSP announcement.
Can first-year students apply for the Central Sector Scholarship in 2026-27? As of 14 October 2026, NSP lists renewal applications only, and no fresh application window has been announced on the portal. Fresh applicants should watch the NSP announcements for any notice rather than assuming a date.
Who is eligible for the Central Sector Scholarship? A fresh applicant must be above the 80th percentile in the relevant Class 12 board stream, have family income up to ₹4.5 lakh a year, and study a regular degree course at a recognised institution. Students already receiving another scholarship or fee waiver are not eligible.
How much is the Central Sector Scholarship amount? It is ₹12,000 a year for the first three years of graduation and ₹20,000 a year at postgraduate level. Students in five-year professional or integrated courses get ₹20,000 in the fourth and fifth year, while BTech and BE students get it in the fourth year.
Is 80% in Class 12 enough to get the scholarship? Not necessarily. The rule is the 80th percentile of successful candidates in your stream and board, so the marks needed vary. Slots are also limited by board, stream and category.
Can I take the Central Sector Scholarship along with a state scholarship? Under the scheme guidelines, a student who already receives another scholarship, including a state scheme or a fee waiver or reimbursement, is not eligible. Check your state scheme's rules before you apply.
